WHAT CAUSES HIP PAIN?

Acute episodes of hip pain can be due to irritation of soft tissue structures of the hip, pelvis and thigh. The most common causes of acute hip pain are:

  • Trochanteric bursitis
  • Gluteus medius tendinopathy
  • Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI)

Chronic hip pain is usually the result of degeneration of the hip joint or chronic inflammation of the bursae of the hip.

  • Hip osteoarthritis
  • Chronic gluteus medius/gluteus minimus tendinopathy
  • Chronic trochanteric bursitis
  • Tendon tears

ACUTE HIP PAIN MANAGEMENT

If you’ve just hurt your hip, here are a few tips to get you on the road to recovery. Please remember that this advice is general and does not constitute medical advice.

Rest From Aggravating Activities

The first step to managing acute pain is to avoid activities, movements and positions that aggravate pain. Your body uses pain as a way to signal to you that the injured area needs time to heal. The best thing you can do is to limit further aggravation and give your body the best chance to recover.

Do I Apply Ice or Heat for Hip Pain?

Depending on the area of pain, ice and/or heat can be beneficial. If the pain is on the outside of your hip, it is likely that you are experiencing pain from trochanteric bursitis or gluteus medius tendinopathy. Ice can be effective in reducing inflammation in these conditions. If you experience deep pain in the centre of the buttock or in the groin, heat may be helpful because it helps to reduce muscle spasm and brings more blood to the area to assist in healing.

Whichever you choose, apply for 20 minutes every 2 hours. Do not apply for too long and always make sure that you watch your skin to make sure you don’t burn yourself.
